Safe Streets Initiative in Southside

During the fall of 2022, the Southside neighborhood identified traffic calming at the intersection of Enterprise and South Streets as a strategy to address concerns about safety from speeding traffic and from drive-by shootings experienced at the intersection of Enterprise and South Streets. Bike Durham was invited by the Southside Neighborhood Association to work with them to develop a plan to improve local safety conditions throughout the neighborhood. We facilitated conversations in both group and individual settings where nearby residents and businesses were invited to share insight, establish consensus, and vote on a set of proposals to be submitted to the City of Durham.

In this second phase, the ideas from the community will be synthesized into a neighborhood traffic calming plan to be presented to the City’s Transportation Department for consideration to implement following the street repavings scheduled for summer 2023.

This important work was made possible thanks to a grant from the Duke Doing Good program.
