Hi {{ FirstName | default: 'Friend' }},
Do we have a lot to share this month! We have been busy building new community relationships, working on advocacy campaigns on Transit Equity and Safe & Healthy Streets, and planning events.
One of our activities that I'd like to share took place at the beginning of August. We participated in two outings with families from the Oxford Manor and Club Boulevard communities. These were organized by Durham's Neighborhood Improvement Services, in conjunction with the Durham Bike Co-op and other partners. Bike Durham volunteers led rides on the Ellerbe Creek greenway from Rock Quarry Park to Trinity Avenue and back, with parents and kids who had never been on the trail (photo below). It was a great experience, and we're making plans to lead two more small group rides in late September and early October.
Through the planning for these rides, we met Tammy Ferrell, a leader in the Oxford Manor community. She is very concerned about the dangers from traffic on the streets surrounding her neighborhood, and from gun violence in her community. We're pleased that Tammy has agreed to share her experiences at our webinar on September 23rd (more below).
This is just one way that we've been reaching out to broaden our connections in Durham, to make sure that we're grounding our advocacy in the experiences of the people who are most at risk walking and biking in Durham: Black and Latinx residents in low-income neighborhoods.
