The Doughman 2017

Bike Month Kick-off Social

Kick off bike month in Durham and learn about biking to work, other bike month activities, and efforts by the public and private sectors to improve cycling in the city.  Take part in a raffle for awesome prices, have your photo taken with your bike, get your bike tuned, and learn about the Durham Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission and Bike Durham efforts to improve bicycling in Durham.

Bike Helmet Fitting

Celebrate Bike Month with a new helmet! There will be helmet fittings and giveaways as well as safety courses. Children's helmets (18 years of age and younger) are free; adult helmets are $10.  All persons receiving a helmet must be present to be fitted properly.

Please bring your bicycle to these events. Kids who need helmets will be fitted and supplied with a new, high quality cycling helmet. All riders must wear helmets, and children will be instructed in safe riding techniques through fun riding courses.

Toast to Trails Cycle & Sip

Honeybee Ride

Enjoy a 20 mile round trip to Duke Farm, off of Friends School Rd. Bike 10 miles to join the Durham County Beekeeper's Association for their monthly apiary inspection (starts at 2pm).  We'll duck out as the inspection is wrapping up to get a head start on the remaining 10 miles to Ponysaurus Brewing Company (219 Hood St).  There we will conclude the ride, rejoin the DCBA and celebrate the day’s efforts.  This ride involves interacting with live honeybees, a limited number of veils are available for sharing.  We head out at 12:45 sharp, after which, no one will be left behind.

Various schools in Durham will be holding walk & bike to school events throughout the month as part of the Safe Routes to School initiative. Students will be meeting near the school and walking and/or biking to school. Volunteers are needed to help guide the students and hand out materials. Ride of Silence

Join us for a silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. The Ride of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph, wear helmets, follow the rules of the road and remain silent during the ride. There are no registration fees. We will be meeting in downtown Durham at the Bull statue and the route will run through town to raise public awareness of cyclist fatalities.

Beer Study to Beer Study Ride!

We'll be riding ~23 miles from Beer Study-Durham to the Beer Study Chapel Hill location. Start gathering at the Durham spot at noon, pre-ride meeting at 12:30, roll out at 1pm. Mostly small roads and greenways/bike paths, but one 4 mile stretch of main roads. There are no off-road stretches on this route. We'll have several break/rally points along the way to make sure everyone is together for transition stretches, and we'll have riders in the middle and rear who know the route. 

To participate in this ride, you should be able to maintain at least a 10mph average for the 22.5 mile stretch. You should have your phone on you and it should be fully charged. Bring your helmet, plenty of water, and a lock is recommended. Given the distance, having an extra set of tubes is recommended as well. You are solely responsible for your personal safety, and the mechanical readiness of your bike and gear.
